Artificial intelligence search company Perplexity AI has started fundraising talks to double its valuation to $8 billion. The startup aims to raise around $500 million in its fourth funding round within a year, according to The Wall Street Journal. This ambitious raise follows a trend of AI companies attracting investor interest, particularly after OpenAI's recent investment surge.

Perplexity's rapid rise is notable, even by Silicon Valley standards. In January, the company was valued at $520 million, and by summer, its valuation hit $3 billion after securing investments from firms like SoftBank's Vision Fund 2. The company hopes to more than double its valuation, though the outcome of the funding talks is still uncertain.

Founded two years ago and backed by figures like Jeff Bezos, Perplexity is a hybrid search engine and AI chatbot that retrieves information like Google and answers questions similar to ChatGPT. The company earns revenue through premium consumer subscriptions and recently expanded into enterprise offerings, allowing corporate clients to search internal files. It plans to introduce advertisements as another revenue stream.

Perplexity's annualized revenue has jumped to an estimated $50 million, up from $10 million in March. The platform processes around 15 million queries daily, reflecting its growing user base and becoming a significant player in AI-driven search solutions.

However, Perplexity has faced challenges, including accusations of plagiarism from news outlets for using their content without permission. The New York Times recently issued a cease-and-desist notice, demanding the company stop accessing its material. CEO Aravind Srinivas responded, stating that Perplexity is not ignoring these concerns and does not wish to have antagonistic relationships with publishers.

The company's success in raising another $500 million will test investor interest in AI startups with strong market potential. Although AI startups like OpenAI have seen record-breaking investments, there is uncertainty around whether Perplexity will secure the funding as expected.

As Perplexity continues its capital-raising efforts, it is positioned to challenge other AI search competitors and push the boundaries of AI integration into search engines and other applications.
